Pointers for Nickelodeon Auditions

Nickelodeon, unlike most production houses, does not hold huge casting calls for their shows. Instead, they have smaller auditions that are usually only known about by people in the industry. For this reason, it would be pertinent to get an agent first.
If you are under the legal age, you will have to get some form of parental consent. Your parents' main concern would be whether getting into an acting career would affect your studies. Make sure you have done enough research on what an acting career entails. It is not just about the glamour, the award shows, and the pay checks. There is also a lot of work that goes into it. When you have done your research about how difficult it can be working in the industry, articulate this to your parents. The more you speak intelligently and the more you display that you are level headed about the endeavour, the higher the chances that they will actually support you. Let them know that it is not a passing phase for you and that you are genuinely interested in being a Nickelodeon actor.
The second thing that you would have to do is get some acting classes. Nickelodeon is a big company and they will only select the best actors. You cannot to expect to sail on your talent alone. If you can afford it, get an acting coach who will tutor you at least five times a week. In several months, your acting skills should be of a higher caliber. It is much better to attend an audition when you are confident about your abilities and having acting classes will make you more convinced about your talent. You do not know when you will get another opportunity to perform in front of the Nickelodeon casting directors. The acting classes will help you not blow your chance.
You will also need to take some headshots of yourself. These are pictures of your face. The best headshots are done professionally so it would be advisable to have them done at a photographer's studio. Once you get your headshots, you would also have to look for an agent to represent you. Agents are good because they will chase after auditions for you and they can give you an idea of what to expect. This is because they tend to know the people in the acting industry. An agent is paid from the money you make on a commission basis. Some agents are more expensive than others are. Make sure that you ask around for recommendations to avoid being ripped off by unscrupulous agents.
Before you go for your Nickelodeon audition, make sure you have prepared at least a two-minute comedic sketch that you will perform. This should be able to portray you as funny and as a serious actor. So incorporate emotion into your monologue. Never be late for your call time! This will not impress the casting agents because they have a schedule to keep to. Be pleasant and memorable and hopefully you will get a call back.

Oscar winner Natalie Portman's ancestry would make a feature film itself. Born Natalie Hershlag in Jerusalem she has dual citizenship in American and Israel, She has said she loves the United States but Jerusalem is where she feels at home.
Her maternal ancestors were Jewish immigrants to the USA from Austria and Russia and her paternal ancestors were Jews who moved to Israel from Poland and Romania.
Her Great Grandparents on her father's side died at Auschwitz and her Romanian Great Grandmother was a spy for British Intelligence during World War II.
Her parents met at a Jewish student centre at Ohio State University where her mother was selling tickets. They corresponded after he returned to Israel and were married when her mother visited a few years later.
Portman was born in Jerusalem on June 9th 1981 but she was 3-years-old when the family moved to the United States of America where her father trained to be a doctor.
After living in Washington DC they moved to Connecticut and finally settled on Long Island, New York in 1960. She went to Jewish schools where she learnt to speak Hebrew and English. She has loved languages from an early age and has studied French, Japanese, German and Arabic.
Portman started taking dancing lessons at the age of 4-years-old and at the age of 10 a Revlon agent asked her to become a child model. She had already decided she wanted to become an actress and turned down the offer to concentrate on acting.
In her school holidays she attended theatre camps and at the age of 10-years-old she auditioned for the off-Broadway show "Ruthless!" a musical about a girl who was prepared to commit murder to get the lead in a school play.
Portman and Britney Spears were chosen to understudy the star Laura Bell Bundy and in 1994 she auditioned for the role of a child who befriends a middle-aged hit man in Luc Besson's film Leon (aka The Professional) and got the part.
To protect her family's identity she took her grandmother's maiden name of Portman as her stage name. The film opened on November 18th 1994 when she was 13-years-old and this was followed by a short film "Developing" that was shown on television.

After playing the leading role of a teenaged mother in "Where The Heart Is" she moved into Harvard Road University to do a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology. Apart from the Star Wars prequels she would not accept parts for four years until she had obtained her degree.
In July 2001 she played Nina in Chekhov's "The Seagull" at New York City's Public Theatre, directed by Mike Nichols. Also in the cast were Meryl Streep, Kevin Kline and Philip Seymour Hoffman.
In 2010 she played veteran ballerina in Darren Aronofsky's film "Black Swan". Film critic Kurt Loder wrote, "Portman gives one of her most compelling performances on the film."
To prepare for the role she trained for five to eight hours a day in ballet for six months. All the hard work paid off and she won both the Golden Globe and the Oscar for Best Leading Actress.
On the set of "Black Swan" she met ballet dancer Benjamin Millepied who was the film's choreographer and they announced their engagement on December 27th 2010. They are expecting their first child in the Summer 2011.
She has been criticised be US Republican politician Mike Huckabee for choosing to have a baby out of wedlock saying she is glamorising single motherhood.

For Drawing - The Structure, Proportions and the Various Parts That Make Up That Face

When learning how to draw a face you need to understand the structure, proportions and the various parts that make up that face
Before I offer you some kind of guideline for the structure, proportions and the various parts of the face, I need to make it clear, that whilst it is really important to get a good understanding of the components that make up the face, it is not an exact science by any means. If you have ever researched the topic you'll know what I mean, you'll find there is a lot of conflicting information and many offering some kind of proof to back up their own particular theory. I am sure no one is deliberately trying to mislead us of course; I believe it is because humans are very diverse beings and there are just so many variables to take into account.
Some examples of the variables included within those diversities:-
• Gender of course
• Natural variations of frame size of the body
• Whether a person is overweight or underweight
• Height
• Age to some degree
• Distinguishing racial features
• Hereditary features
• Mixed racial DNA
Added to which each individual person's DNA is unique so the combinations when two people becoming parents is almost infinite If you add to that the problem of subjectivity, emotional sight and the fact that people really do see the world around them differently to you and me. The part of me that is a qualified psychologist is only too aware how that concept escapes many people. If you ask anyone, are you aware that everyone sees things differently? Most will answer yes I understand that, but then, when we judge people for their views, beliefs and opinions we judge them with our own set of views, beliefs and opinions as if that is the only benchmark that makes sense. Consequently, we often fail to see what other people see and what makes perfect sense to them. I don't want to delve too deeply into that side of human psychology right now, but the point of what I am trying to explain is why there isn't just one simple, straightforward, universal formula for all of us all to agree with and to follow. Just one final point that I hope summarises for you a lot of what is written above, and that is when I am looking at a face, what I see before me is heavily influenced by the emotional half of my brain and the sum total of all my life experiences, understandings, preferences, learnt prejudices etc and not just what the logical half of the brain perceives and evaluates. More on the emotional aspects and influences on "another page" In my research I have seen many diagrams much more complex than my own, and with a lot more detail and also some very well thought out formulas of relationship of different parts of the face to each other, but I have kept my illustrations simple in the hopes that it serves as enough of a guide for you to begin the process of tackling faces. To give you an idea I put together a mixture of what I found to make the most sense to me and hope that you find it helpful. I have tried to keep my illustrations simple with not too much detail on each because I found many illustrations with too much detail a little overwhelming and complicated.
Front and side view
A good starting point is the general proportions of the head from the front or the side. As a rule of thumb when looking at the face from the front (not including the ears) it is approximately two-thirds of the height of the face. When looking at the side of the face at the widest points it is usually slightly less than the height, maybe seven-eighths of the height of the face.
The eyes above or below the centre of the face?
It is not unusual for artists to make the eyes their initial starting point. Some information suggests that if you draw a line across the centre the eyes start just above the centre and others suggest they start just below the centre. Both can be correct so obviously approximately near the centre of the head is not going to be badly out of proportion.
Eye widths and space in between are pretty much equal
There doesn't seem to be too much disagreement with the width of the eyes and the spacing in between them, but only the proportions they take up across the face. Some believe that if you divide the width of the face across into 5 equal parts then make each eye one fifth and the space between the eyes one fifth then apportion the last two fifths equally one each side. Another school of thought splits the width up into 4 parts with the eyes and the space in between them equal and the last quarter split into two equal parts. I believe because of the multiple variations the human face both answers will be correct sometimes and for the rest of the time somewhere in between. As I say not an exact science but at least quite a good basic guide.
The nose is central and usually just a bit wider than the space between the eyes
Using the same illustration you can see the nose is central and usually just a bit wider than the space between the eyes. This is a typical situation where again it becomes obvious that it is not an exact science. For example some cultural differences where the nose can be much wider
Indication to get mouth in reasonable proportion
By drawing a triangle from the centre of the nose between the eyes it is an easy way to ensure that you should get the mouth proportioned about right.
The positioning of the ears
Generally the ears start in line with the top of the eyes and finish just under the nose, but not all ears are the same length of course, so as with the sample on the right it could finish lower, possibly somewhere near the top of the mouth. I believe it is fairly accurate to say that from the side view, the ears are not in the centre but mostly nearer the back than the front. In this particular example the centre of the ear is 57% from the front of the head or 43% from the back of the head. So it would be a realistic guide when drawing the ear to position the front of the ear at the half way mark and then probably make the width approximately one sixth of the width of the side of the head.

For the final guide the face is split into 3 sections, with the top third including the hair, hairline and most if not the entire forehead. The middle third includes the eyes around the centre and the nose. The final third with the mouth and chin in. The bottom third is further sub-divided to show the mouth just above the centre line. In summary, as previously stated, there is no precise set of rules to the get the structure and proportions of human face exactly right for every face, we are all unique. There are just so many variables, combinations and possibilities and to make matters even more complicated we need to consider the angle we are viewing the face at. All the above examples are working from the assumption we are looking directly at the face on the same level. A simple example would be to take a tall glass in your hand and hold it directly in front of you upright. As you tilt the glass towards you or away from you, observe how the rim becomes either more circular or more oval, and the height of the glass becomes shorter or taller. I know it is kind of obvious in one sense but it is about making your drawings more realistic and drawing what you actually see rather than calling on our preconceived ideas of how things or people should look. However you begin your journey there is no real substitute for experience through practise and trial and error. Just remember nobody ever learns anything by getting it right first time, it is only when we make mistakes that we know what to correct or work on to improve our efforts. If you can see your embarrassing disasters along the way as being a positive thing, and then viewing them as learning what not to do next time then your journey will be less frustrating and it will be easier to maintain your passion to learn.

Art Fair Selling

Last Saturday I attended a wonderful art fair in Petoskey, Michigan. While there I decided to do a little research on how artists presented and sold their work. As I walked the show, I only went into tents that had artwork that appealed to me. So out of the show, I entered 30 booths.
Overall the display of artwork was very professional. There were lots of different price points to appeal to just about anyone who entered the booth. Items were presented in an attractive manner and there was a good deal of variety in most of the booths. So overall, I think the artists did very well presenting their work.
But this is where the wheels came off the wagon.
I entered each booth and reviewed the artwork. Since I only went into booths that had artwork that attracted me, it was not hard to spend several minutes looking over the art. When I found a piece that really was attractive to me, I spent even more time. I looked at the artwork with genuine interest. I think there were several pieces I would have purchased as I was doing my research.
Do you know why I did not purchase any art? Lack of money? No. Lack of interest? No. Lack of someone asking me if I wanted to purchase the piece of art I had spent more than 2 minutes looking at? Yes!!!!
Out of the 30 booths only 2 artists greeted me. Out of the 2 artists who greeted me one said "hi" and the other said "welcome to my booth". That was the end of the conversation.
The artists had taken care to make their display very attractive. They spent the money to participate in the art fair. Why would they not approach me and try to sell me their art?
Maybe artists really do not understand "Sales". Maybe they associate the thought of selling with the shiny toothed Used Car Sales stereotype.
Selling is the art of providing a prospect with the information they need to make an informed purchase decision.
Had one of the 30 artists approached me and told me about their artwork they would have been one step closer to the sale. Had they told me about the process they use to create the artwork, they would have been another step closer to making the sale. Had they told me about the inspiration behind the artwork, they would have been on the very edge of making the sale. Had they asked me where in my home I thought the artwork would be best displayed, they would have made the sale.
Selling artwork is not a "hard" sale, like selling truckloads of a commodity or the like. But it still needs to be sold. If you look at the description of things I listed in the paragraph above, you can see this is pretty simple stuff. It is simply describing what you do, what you love. How much more could you sell at a fair if you talked to prospects about the artwork that is your passion? How much more could you sell if you simply asked the prospect where they could see your artwork in their home?
Life is full of missed opportunities. In my book, 30 artists had a real opportunity to sell me their artwork. I honestly was ready to buy something. All they needed to do was to tell me about their artwork and ask me to purchase.

Who's Your Favourite Captain America: Steve Rogers or Bucky?

It's Captain America month, and in case you haven't heard, the latest Marvel superhero flick Captain America: The First Avenger has managed to knock Harry Potter off the number 1 box office slot in America. Not only has the film managed to overtake Potter's final outing, it has also raked in some favourable reviews from critics worldwide. Cap fever isn't just hitting Hollywood though. Right now Captain America is headlining the summer's mega comic cross event 'Fear Itself', where former sidekick of Steve Rogers, Bucky Barnes met his unfortunate demise last month. With the reception to Bucky's death being extremely poor, I'm beginning to question if perhaps Barnes was the more popular Captain America after all.
Steve Rogers:
Steve is the original and most well known Captain America. Steve's story began as a skinny art student from Brooklyn who was rejected by the U.S Military for his poor shape. Desperate to aid the war effort, Rogers agreed to take part in a top-secret operation known as Operation Rebirth, which transforms Steve into the peak of human perfection. In the closing days of World War 2, Rogers is hurled into the freezing Atlantic after trying to stop a bomb launched by villain Baron Zemo, where Rogers remained frozen in suspended animation for years, only to one day be awoken by The Avengers.
Steve gains appeal from being a man out of time. Although that has worn off drastically in recent years, Steve's morals and vales constantly reflect his time in the past. His never say die attitude, is something all the heroes look up too, and his authoritive presence makes him one of the only few worthy of leading the Avengers. Steve's morals have often led him to question the actions of some of his teammates. In the 2006-2007 mega crossover 'Civil War', Steve opposes a government superhero registration act, led by former team mate Tony Stark as he sees it as a removal of civil rights. Steve's efforts to oppose the registration act led him to surrender to authorities where he was shot down upon his trial on the steps of the federal courthouse.
It was later revealed that Steve was trapped in time, as a result of the Red Skulls evil plan. After reliving his past, Steve was eventually rescued by the new Captain America and the New Avengers. Apart from a brief stint as Captain America during the 2010 comic event 'Siege', Rogers gave up the mantle of Captain America to focus on running the superhero community as Commander Steve Rogers. This is again what makes Steve such a pure character. His sacrifice of giving up the mantle of Captain America really emphasizes what a good heart the character has.
James 'Bucky' Barnes
Bucky was one of the three characters alongside Uncle Ben and Jason Todd that were thought would always stay dead in comics. Yet in 2005, Bucky was famously revealed to be a Soviet Assassin known as the Winter Soldier in Ed Brubaker's brilliant Captain America series. Having spent his time as the Winter Soldier aiding the Cold War effort, Bucky was kept in suspended animation between missions so his masters could keep him under control.
It wasn't until he was discovered by Steve Rogers did Bucky regain control after Rogers used the mystical device known as the Cosmic Cube to restore all of Barnes's memories. After spending time working for S.H.I.E.L.D Bucky stepped up to the mantle of Captain America when Steve was gunned down in the aftermath of the superhero Civil War.
What made Bucky such a great Captain America, was that he was flawed. Unlike Steve, Bucky's only superhuman asset was his bionic arm meaning he wasn't as advantaged in combat as his predecessor. This often led to Barnes being captured, which actually became a cliché associated with the character. Barnes was not an idol to his fellow superheroes, as he had to earn their acceptance. Bucky was trying to redeem himself for his past actions as the Winter Soldier, he never wanted to be Captain America, he just didn't want anyone other than Steve wielding the shield.
Brubaker created an epic narrative with the past eventually catching up with James.
